First Aquarium Fish Hunting

If you haven't purchased your fish aquarium fish yet, you're in for one of the best moments in the aquarium hobby. You can finally go and purchase the fish you have been dreaming of. However, where do you begin? What fish should you buy first? All these questions naturally come up pretty quick when sitting down to plan out your fish itinerary. I will answer all these questions for you to help you begin your aquarium fish hunting journey.

The first natural question that comes to mind is where do I begin? My suggestion to you is to find reliable resource, as well as perform your own independent research. You can find much success in the aquarium hobby by consulting with a local fish store owner, looking into online reef blogs, etc., but you also want to perform your own research to confirm your findings as well. The decision of which fish you will buy is meant to be long-term, so make sure you are comfortable with your choices. In your research, you also want to account for the matured size of each fish in comparison with the size of your aquarium to make sure you have enough space.

After gathering some information, you want to create a list of the fish you would like to put in your aquarium. You should identify the order in which you will introduce each fish. My biggest suggestion to you, no matter how hard it might be, is to not deviate from the list and purchase a different fish unless you have performed additional research. You want to make sure the fish you purchase will be a good substitute, and still compatible with the other livestock you carry in your aquarium.

The next step for you in this process is to actually complete the list of fish to purchase. This list is highly dependent on the owner of the aquarium, and should be created by you to make sure you enjoy what is in your aquarium. The suggestions I would provide when creating this list is to carefully consider the size of the fish, their temperament, reef compatibility (will they eat corals), and ideal aquarium size for their species. You want to make sure you purchase a fish that will grow to a size that is sustainable for your aquarium tank size. Ensure each fish you purchase will get along with the others in your aquarium ecosystem. Some fish species are not as compatible with others, and you want to make sure you identify this in your research. The order in which you introduce the fish can be very helpful if you are intending to purchase a highly territorial fish. Lastly, nothing is worse than purchasing a fish to realize they just ate through your entire new coral overnight. Make sure you purchase a fish that is reef-compatible, if you pursue a reef aquarium. Hopefully these tips will help you get off to a great start to your journey!

I hope these tips provided you a good starting point for helping you identify the fish to purchase.

Tips For Choosing A Fish Tank

Related image

Picking the right tropical fish tank will make the care of your tank easier and much more fun for both you and the fish, so you will want to choose an aquarium that not only looks sharp, but is also functional and appropriate for your needs. Ultimately the decision is yours to make - below are a few thoughts that should help to insure you pick an aquarium that is perfect for you!

Shape

The most prevalent shapes for fish tanks are hexagon and rectangular, but you can also buy rounded bubble tanks, coffee table tanks and even thin fish tanks that fit right in your wall! When deciding on the size of your tank, you need to consider the location where you will setup the tropical fish tank to be certain the tank will fit and won't stick out into any traffic areas.

Rectangular fish tanks are best for your water quality and fish health. Because rectangular tanks are long, the surface area (the area that meets the air) is bigger in ratio than aquarium tanks of other shapes and sizes and allows for best exchange of gases and, hence a healthier aquarium tank. A hexagon shaped fish tank, looks neat, but there is not as much surface area. You can still have a successful hexagon shaped tank, but you will most likely need to spend more time maintaining the water and won't be able to house as many tropical fish as you can when using a rectangular tank which holds as much water.

Location

If just are going to have 1 fish as a conversation piece on a small shelf or bathroom vanity a cool decorative tropical aquarium could be just the thing. When picking a location for the fish tank be sure that you take the weight of the tank into consideration (a filled aquarium can weigh 12 pounds per gallon so a filled 20 gallon Aquarium Setup can weigh over 200 pounds) and locate it a spot that can support the weight including the right stand. When buying your aquarium tank, it is necessary to think about its placement in your house. If you are looking to add appeal to an empty corner, a hexagon shaped aquarium tank might be wonderful, but a long rectangular aquarium setup could make an interesting statement along a wall.

Size

If you are just a beginner you should consider a 20 to 30 gallon aquarium setup. A small 5 gallon aquarium tank is fine if you do not have a lot of space but you will have to be sure you don't overload the aquarium with fish or the quality of your water will suffer which can make your fish unhealthy. Don't be tempted by those little fish tanks or bowls that have 1 or 2 fish with no filtration, Believe me, the fish will not live for a long time in that tank and you will spend a lot of time monitoring the water quality and performing water changes. The rule of thumb for size when buying an aquarium is that the bigger the aquarium tank, the less maintenance you'll need to carry out and the more fish you can house.

Typically you can house 1 inch of fish for every gallon of water in the tank - along with adequate aeration and filtration, that is. If you buy a 20 gallon aquarium setup, you can have 20 inches of tropical fish, or about 15 fish with the tinier 5 gallon aquariums you will only be able to keep 2 or 3 fish.

Picking the right tank is a question of personal preference, you need to weigh the options and pick what fits your needs. Doing your homework before you go to the store will help to save you both time and money in the long run.

Aquarium Fish Food Tips

Image result for Aquarium Fish Food Tips

A balanced diet for your aquarium fish is essential to their survival. Most of the commercially available dry fish foods are almost always unbalanced. In many cases, the vitamin content will gradually decline at room temperature and since majority of the dry food for tropical fish commonly used will only keep for about three months, it is always advisable to buy fish-feeds in many small packs rather than in one large pack.

The feed could preferably be kept absolutely dry in a refrigerator. However, all fish appreciate a change of diet and will thank you for your consideration with more interesting behavior, better colours, and greater readiness to breed and better general well -being. This change of diet should be supplemented with live food; majority of which now come in irradiated freeze dried forms to make sure that they are disease free.

I will mention a few that could be found handy in some major aquarium shops and I will group them into two. And they are flake foods and freeze-dried foods

Flake foods

Most popular and highly recommended brands are Aquarian®, Tetra®, and Wardley®. They are varying in cost and quality. Wardley is the least expensive among the three. However, the Aquarian and Tetra are richer in specialty flakes compare to Wardley.

Freeze-dried foods

You will also find freeze-dried foods available in aquarium stores. They are favorite foods for aquarium fish. They have single animal-ingredient like mosquito larvae, blood worms and Tubifex worm each. Aquarist should note that freeze-foods are not in themselves complete diet but they can be combine to flake food or other type of freeze-dried foods. We shall discuss more about Tubifex as a popular freeze-dried food.

TUBIFEX - This is a traditional favorite food relished by most fishes. They are small red worms that live at the bottom of streams and rivers particularly where large amounts of organic matter are present. Therefore, it is difficult for the aquarist to collect them life from their habitat. It is therefore preferable to buy Tubifex from pet shops where they are already clean, freeze-dried and concentrated into cube forms.

From personal experience, Tubifex tubes could probably be the most exciting feed to use for fishes. The cube can be stuck to the front inside wall of the aquarium. The fishes in the tank will immediately come forward and bit off pieces of worms excitedly until satisfied.

You need not bother to remove the rest worms since they seldom pollute and in most case fishes return to the feed for further fill.

Goldfish Tips - Finding Out The Gender of Your Goldfish

Boy or Girl?

How can you tell whether your Goldfish is male or female? You might want to know because you want to breed them, or give them the right name before Jack turns out to be the mother Goldfish! Here are some clues that might help you sort out the Goldfish boys from the Goldfish girls:

* The female Goldfish are slightly bigger than the males and look even heavier in the abdomen when they are full of eggs.

* Male Goldfish develop white spots on their gills and pectoral called "breeding tubercles" during spawning time.

* Males have midline ridges on their undersides beginning from the back of their pelvic fins and ending at their vent opening. This feature can be absent or smaller in females.

* Males have firm abdomen while in females; the area between the pelvic fins and the anal fins is more pliable.

* Male Goldfish have longer and pointed pectorals as well as stiff fin ray, while females have more rounded pectorals and shorter, finer front fin rays.

* Male goldfish have smaller and more oval anal openings and the anal fins are not as thick as that of the female goldfish who has a larger and rounder anal opening with a slight protrude. The anal fin is also thicker.

* The spawning time is the easiest time to distinguish the boys from the girls. The female opening will look larger and more swollen as the eggs begin to ripen. She would look big and heavier. Since fish reproduce through external fertilization, you can make out when a male is ready by the white breeding tubercles and you can actually push out the milt through his ventral opening by running a gentle finger along his sides.

* There is one more obvious, but kind of time taking way to make out which one of your fish is male and female. Find out who is chasing who - the chaser will be the male and the chased and tired out one will be the female! It's the natural tendency on part of the male goldfish to chase and nudge at a female's rear part.

What Is The Best Fish Tank For a Crayfish?

What is the best fish tank for a pet crayfish? Well, the answer to this question depends on a few things. Do you plan on having other fish live with your pet crayfish? Do you plan on having another pet crayfish all together? Because if you do, a desktop aquarium or 10 gallon fish tank probably won't be ideal. I know from experience. Personally, I'd recommend a 20 gallon fish tank for just one crayfish, nothing smaller.

Crayfish Are Very Dirty

Crayfish are dirty little creatures. They put out a lot of waste. And this waste can make your tank ugly and toxic for other fish, if you have them. With a bigger tank, like a 20 gallon tank, there's more water to take on the load of all of your pet crayfish's waste.

Crayfish Are Aggressive and Territorial

Crayfish will eat and fight just about anything. They are super aggressive and territorial. Having said that, if you plan on having other fish in your tank, you want a tank that is large enough to hold everyone comfortably. Having a bigger tank will reduce the chances that your other fish get eaten by your pet crayfish. They'll have more space to swim. And your pet crayfish will have his little territory all to himself. Remember though, with crayfish, any other fish in your tank may become crayfish food at any given moment. I always suggest putting aggressive fish in the tank and fish that swim near the top. Red tail shark, mollies and hatchet fish can often work well with pet crayfish. They have for me in the past anyway.

Water Changes

With a fish tank that is a minimum of 20 gallons, managing water changes for your crayfish, and other fish, will be much easier. Speaking of, make sure that you change roughly 25% of the water weekly. This will ensure a healthy, clean tank. One that will help keep your other fish remain healthy, as well as your pet crayfish.

If You Get Two Crayfish

If you decide to get two crayfish and put them in one fish tank. Based on my experience, it's only a matter of time before one eats the other. Personally, I think you'll need a tank bigger than 20 gallons for two crayfish. However, if you must have two crayfish, make sure you have separate hideouts for them both. These can be bought online, made out of PVC or found in most pet stores that sell aquariums.

Natural Care for Animals of All Kinds

One of the things that excited us about growing our own food was the fact that we were going to have food from our own garden and meat from our pigs and chickens without the added hormones and chemicals. While it is true that we didn't have to add chemicals, there were a lot of chemicals we didn't think about that come into play on a regular day. For example, the horses have flies that bother them, the donkey constantly has a scratch from something, the garden has bugs that have to be attended to, and then there is the de-worming of all the animals. So in the hopes of trying to have a chemical free home and toxic free family, we started looking into other options for our little farm.
When we first started the farm 7 years, we started with chickens. We actually hatched our first chicken in an incubator in our kitchen (it was a 1st grade science project). It was so neat watching the baby hatch and then raising more chicks one by one. One thing that I did not know about the chickens was that they are so fragile. One time we bought a couple of very unusual chickens from a sale. We were so excited about the them. We got them home, set up their pen, gave it food and water, and went to bed. The next morning we came out to feed all the animals and low and behold the chicken was dead! I couldn't believe it. I started researching to see what would have happened. I came to learn that chicks tend to get stressed out very easily. Over the years we have had some chickens get an upper respiratory issue and then die. We have bought all kinds of medicines to help the chicks to get past the sicknesses but nothing helped. so we decided to look into natural care for the animals. What we discovered was that essential oils were getting great results for people and animals. So about 2 1/2 years ago, my family started using essential oils for our support. We started with our family and the cats and dogs. The oils worked great on the fleas and ticks as well as for helping an unset pet calm down and relax. Next, I found that chickens could truly benefit from several essential oils as well. We  used lavender to help them relax and Thyme to help those respiratory issues.
The pros for use essential oils outweigh the cons to me. I have used a variety of them on all of our animals including the horses and donkey. I knew I would not go back to store-bought cleaners, pet care products, or bug spray when my best friend called and told me a very scary story about her little dog. She had gone to the store and bought a collar for her dog and soon after putting it on her she began to act really funny. She could not walk and could not get up and down on the chair. In a couple of hours the dog was paralyzed. When she went to the vet, he told her this was one of the side effects of the chemicals in the collar. I have totally loved our toxic free home and farm. We now, very quickly and easily make our own bug spray, spray for flies, and spray for the scratches on the animals. I have actually saved money because all the products I use on the animals are safe for my family as well. I can make one bottle of bug spray and put it on the kids before they go out to keep flies and gnats away and then take that same bottle to the garden and spray the plants and get rid of all the aphids and beetles. I love my oils and I don't see life without them.

The Betta

So, you are interested in buying a Betta fish or another tropical fish? What makes you consider the Betta?

Are you buying the Betta simply because you see them in little tiny round bowls and you think that this seems like an easy fish to take home for a pet?

If that's the only reason, I'd like you to stop right now and reconsider your choice of pets. While most pet shops have the Betta in a tiny bowl, in real life, most Bettas probably would love a larger housing. After all, would you like to be stuck in a little bowl where you can practically touch the walls from wherever you are in the bowl? Would you like to be held prisoner in such a small place even if you did have the water to swim around in?

Take a look at the natural environment of any fish; take a good look. You've probably never seen a fish being born or raised or living its whole life in a tiny Betta bowl, except at the pet stores.

The reason they are in those bowls is because they can't let the Betta in with certain other fish, especially not their own kind of fish, the male Betta. They are called the "Siamese Fighting Fish" and that should give you a clue as to the personality of such a fish.

So, let's face it. The real reason that all those fish are in tiny bowls is because that's the cheapest way that the fish stores can keep the fish. There are no filters, and no filtration cartridges to purchase when you use a tiny bowl as a fish tank. The store wants you to believe that this fish-caring on the Betta is simple, easy and not expensive.

If the pet shops were forced to give proper housing to Betta fish, they would have to give each Betta a ten or twenty gallon fish tank. That would be too expensive, so all the shops house the Betta fish in tiny, glass bowls that are economical for the shops.

Personally, I had a Betta in a ten gallon fish tank and that Betta was the happiest fish ever.. So, be prepared, and be nice to your Betta. Give your Betta a larger living space. You can put some plants in there and some small decorations and you are all set for your new Betta's environment.

While you are at the library, pick up a few books on tropical fish and pick up a book about Bettas but read with caution. The book will tell you how to care for the Betta. It will tell you where to locate Bettas and Betta supplies.

Another suggestion:

Before you purchase your Betta, or before you purchase any fish at all, do the wise thing and purchase everything you need for the fish before you even look at fish. The idea is to have the setup all fit into the spot where you will keep it in your home or office. Set up the tank, the water, the filter, and any decorative things you want inside the tank, and then let the filter run for a day or two before you go to purchase the fish.

Consider putting in a few live plants besides the plastic ones you may have chosen. Mixing both live and plastic plants in an aquarium can give it a most interesting appearance.

Consider buying a bigger filter than necessary, just because. Most times, people look for small, inexpensive set ups for fish.

Personally, for myself, I'd always opted for just a little bit larger. You just never know. Sure you are starting out with one fish but months from now or a year from now, you just might have a whole community of fish living in that same tank. If you think larger at the beginning, that saves you time, trouble and money later on in your hobby progress.

Housing?

Do your research if you are considering raising fish. Find out which fish are friendly and which are quite aggressive. There has been more than one hobbyist who has brought home a predator fish only to find his or her other fish dead after a day or so.

And then there are those fish who just like to nibble on each other. Some of the Angel Fish varieties sometimes will nibble the fins of other Angel Fish. And they will nibble and nibble till they can't nibble anymore. So you might do a lot of research on Angel Fish before buying them.

If you want to breed fish and you are a true beginning, the Guppy might be the perfect fish for you to start with. But remember, that bigger Guppy will most likely try to eat all the babies so have a separate tank ready for the baby fish OR get one of those divider particles for your tank and you can divide almost any tank into two separate tanks. If you look in the fish pet stores or aquariums, you'll see that they also make small side tanks that hang off the tops of the larger aquariums. They'll catch the fish, but them in that smaller tank and then carry the tank to the register for you to buy your fish. So, there are many options when you are thinking of buying or raising fish.

Food?

Buy the recommended foods. And if you can find a no frills brand that will work also.

You might not want to do this but I'll share a secret with you. I did run out of fish food one day, long ago, in winter and I didn't live near a pet store. I went to the cabinet and took out the box of Cheerios and proceeded to crush the Cheerios into a fine grain. Yes, I did feed this to the fish and they ate like that for ten or more days, until finally I was able to go and buy fish food. Yes they survived!

Some fish love live food. And the pet stores will sell live food for the reptiles and for some fish. They mostly always have a feeding tank, a huge tank, that has feeder fish in it. If you have a huge fish like an Oscar fish, that fish sometimes as large as 12 inches, can and will and does eat fish. I am not suggesting you feed any fish to another fish. I'm just sharing ideas here.

Do only what is healthy and safe for your own fish. Read, read, read, and do your research on topics of fish, fish diseases, and other aquatic related topics.

That's the bottom line, knowledge is power and knowledge of the fish industry, and of the details of how fish live and breed, is a wonderful thing when you are ready to really jump into your aquarium hobby.

Is Your Cat in Pain? Recognize These Signs & Symptoms!

From jumping to and from the bed to smashing the wall hangings on the floor, cats have done it all. They're the most happening thing in your house, keeping you busy all the time.

If you're a cat owner, you'll probably relate to what I just mentioned about them, but what you're most like to ignore is a cat's sickness. I'm not judgemental about your relation with the cat, but this is the most common scenario. Since it is in the nature of a cat to hide pain, it becomes difficult or impossible to understand when a cat needs attention. However, before you start making conclusions about your cat, you need to understand these points mentioned below.

#1. Why cats hide their pain

Cats are hunters by nature, and their tendency to disguise discomfort is an evolutionary holdover from their days in the wild where injury or illness paints a target on their back to nearby predators. The appearance of weakness would make a cat vulnerable or put her in danger of being bullied or abandoned by her group. Even though domestic cats have nothing to worry about becoming prey, they may still view other pets in the house or even other people as their competition. Even if you're extremely overprotective of them, there are chances you still might not be able to spot when your kitty is masking her pain symptoms.

#2. Recognizing the symptoms of pain in cats

A cat who's experiencing pain will often show changes in behaviour that are accompanied with mood swings. As a cat parent, you need to spot when you cat is not in a mood to mingle with anyone in the family and doesn't show any signs of being right or wrong. Mentioned below are the few behavioural changes among cats when they're in pain:

    Hiding
    Sitting still and hunched up
Loss of interest in people, other pets, or even activities
Neglecting to groom themselves, or even over-grooming in one spot
Purring, excessive meowing, or unusual vocalizations
Restlessness or aggression toward friendly surroundings

Other than these behavioural changes, a cat in pain will lose appetite all of a sudden. You might as well witness unusual vomiting. When cats suffer chronic pain, such as arthritis they might stop using the litter box or stop climbing objects in the house because it's too difficult for them to climb.

#3. How your vet can help

Any abnormal behaviour from a cat should mean an immediate visit to her veterinarian. Instead experimenting with her supplements and medicines, it is best that you take her to the vet, who can then determine whether these changes are due to pain or illness. Depending on the reason for the behavioural change your vet will then treat the underlying cause. The vet will help with pain management - which includes the prescription of pain medication, heat therapy, physical rehabilitation and even massage. If the cat is suffering from chronic joint pain, the vet will put her on weight management food and sometimes recommend changes in her diet.

You might have to visit the veterinarian several times a month until your cat shows normal behaviour once again. Do not hesitate in taking some time off your busy schedule to take her to the visit, remember each visit will help your cat live longer and healthier.

#4. How you can help

The only things your vet can do is prescribing her right medication and seeing her time to time, but you still have a bigger responsibility to handle. Remember to spend a lot of time with her; she might not ask for it, or sometimes even avoid the love you shower on her, but she needs it the most. You can consider relocating her bed, food dishes, water bowls and litter box, so they're easier for her to locate. Make sure the litter box is simple enough for her to climb effortlessly. In case you're living in a big family, remember to keep children away from her. While she might escape it herself, you don't want her to lose trust in people while she's recovering.

Your cat is certainly an important part of your life and even if you're worried about her health, remember she is a fighter. Just don't forget to give her all the love and attention that she's been avoiding for a while. And once she's okay she'll be the same little purr-ball that she always was, the one who's smashed things on the floor and jumped from one corner of the house to another.

Already waiting for her to be okay!

Owning a cat is not the easiest thing you can do, but if you can take care of the little thing it will definitely give you a lot of happiness. As the author of the article, and being a cat owner it is my responsibility to let other cat owners know the symptoms of pain in cats [http://www.iloveyourcat.com/]. Through the years of being with my little kitten, what I learned is a lot about the nature of cats and the various things that make them happy and sad. Also while working with I Love Your Cat [http://www.iloveyourcat.com/gallery], I understood that cats are extremely adorable animals and you can never have enough of them. To check out some extremely pawwdorable pictures and videos of cats you can visit the website.

The #1 Thing You Can Do For Your Pet’s Health: Learn to Read a Pet Food Label

While attractive packaging and seals of approval on the front of a bag or can of pet food are what attract most people, the real information you need is found on the back… on the nutrition label. As a savvy pet parent, you also need to be aware of what’s NOT listed on the label. But let’s start with the label itself. If you pick up any bag or can of pet food, you should see two key things:

1 The ingredients list
2 The guaranteed analysis

1 An ingredient list is required to display all ingredients in decreasing amounts (by weight) used in the product. The biggest contributors are first on the list and the smallest are last. While you’re reading the ingredients list, pay most attention to the first 10 ingredients. These are the major ingredients that make up the bulk of the food. The very first ingredient you want to see is a specific named source of meat (beef, lamb, chicken, etc.) – especially for cats.

Other Things to Pay Attention  to in the Ingredients List Are:

Ø Do you see mostly real food names that you recognize? (i.e. pork, pumpkin, rice, barley)

Ø Are corn, wheat, soy, white potato, powdered cellulose, or their byproducts listed in the first few ingredients? These are common allergens. Grains such as oats, barley, quinoa, and millet are much better options.

Ø Does the food contain fresh sources of fruits and vegetables? Bonus points if they’re organic.

Ø Are there a lot of chemical names listed? BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, Glycerol Monostearate, and Propylene Glycol are chemical preservatives that are toxic to pets, but are often added to pet foods.

Ø Be aware of vegetables and grains being used as a source of protein. The majority of the protein in the food should come from real meat sources, not peas, soy, corn, gluten, or grains.

Ø Avoid foods that use byproducts such as “chicken byproduct meal,” or “beef byproduct meal.”

Ø If you can, it’s best to stay away from protein “meals” in general. If you’re purchasing a product that contains “meal,” it’s better for it to specify the animal (i.e. “lamb meal”) than for the more generic “meat meal” or “poultry meal.”

Ø Stay away from foods with MSG, artificial colors, and added sugars such as high fructose corn syrup. These ingredients aren’t healthy for your precious pet… or you.

2 The guaranteed analysis section of the label lists by percentage the breakdown of the food. You’ll almost always see a percentage for protein, fat, fiber, and moisture. Other things will also often be listed such as ash and different nutrients.

How Many Carbs is Your Pet Consuming?

What you usually won’t find in the guaranteed analysis is the percentage of carbohydrates. This is a critical number that you can roughly gauge by subtracting the percentages of protein, fat, moisture, crude fiber (an indigestible part of carbohydrates), and ash listed on the label from 100. The number you have left over will be a rough estimate of the percentage of carbs the food contains. Why does knowing the percentage of carbs in your cat or dog’s food matter? Because in the wild, dogs and cats naturally consume very few carbohydrates. Feeding them high-carb foods is a surefire recipe for chronic health problems to develop.

An Uncomfortable Truth About Pet Foods

There’s an ingredient in pet food that sounds innocent, but has a dark side that most consumers aren’t aware of. According to the National Renderers Association, “Rendered protein meals such as meat and bone meal, poultry byproduct meal, and fish meal are almost universally used in pet foods.” Rendering is basically a process where a whole lot of animal parts that can’t be used for human food are thrown into large vats and cooked into a “sludge” that is then sold to pet food companies and used to make pet food. Included in this sludge can be road kill and euthanized animals (including cats & dogs!). While you as a loving pet parent may find this disturbing, it’s not illegal. Look at how the FDA defines “rendered animal feed ingredients”: “Rendering of poultry and other animal tissues has been practiced for over a hundred years as a means of salvaging valuable protein and fat content from otherwise waste material. For many years end products from rendering have been used to feed animals. The rendering industry utilizes packinghouse offal, meat processing waste, restaurant waste and animal tissues from other sources including animals that have died otherwise than by slaughter.”

What should Dogs & Cats be eating?

Aside from what they can steal off the table and any wild animals they might happen to catch and consume, your pet’s nutrition is your total responsibility. You determine both the quality and the quantity of what they are fed. Cats are obligate carnivores. This means that they must eat meat to survive. According to veterinarian Dr. Gary Richter, “The vast majority of a feline diet should be meat based, and all the protein should be sourced from meat.” Depending on who you ask, dogs are either carnivores or omnivores. Ultimately this just means that dogs have a bit more flexibility in their diet in that they’ll eat non-meat food. That being said, most dogs do best on a meat-based diet.

The Trouble With Kibble

What do we mean by “kibble”? It’s those hard, dry pellets that come in bags and boxes that people purchase to feed their pets. It’s so common that when many people think of “pet food,” kibble is what immediately comes to mind. But this wasn’t always the case… Only 100 or so years ago most dogs were being fed table scraps. House and barn cats caught mice, birds, and other small animals and were given saucers of milk to drink. As more people moved from the country to the city, however, the demand for convenient pet foods increased. People were eating canned foods themselves and thus the natural evolution was canned foods for pets. But during WWII this became a problem when metal was being rationed and cans were no longer available for pet food. This was the advent of dry food for pets. Then in the 1950s, the Ralston Purina company (now Purina) innovated a new process for creating dry pet food called “extrusion.” Extrusion is when ingredients are mixed together to create a soft, dough-like substance that is heated and extruded (pushed) through a small hole. The dough expands and cools and becomes a uniform piece of pet food known as kibble. The same basic process for creating kibble pioneered by Purina is still used today. Along with the rise of pet food manufacturing, an organization called the Pet Food Institute was formed in the 1960s. The Institute started a campaign warning pet owners that feeding table scraps was dangerous. Instead, pet owners should only feed “complete” foods. In other words, they should only feed processed pet foods that they purchased.

The Pet Food Institute still operates today and states on its “About Us” page that its members “make 98% of all U.S. pet food products.” As an industry association it’s primary purpose is to promote and protect the pet food industry. By the way, according to the website Statistica.com, the pet food market in the United States alone was valued at 24.6 billion dollars in 2016.

Do Pet Food Standards Provide a False Sense of Security?

Most commercially-produced foods you’ll find on store shelves will proudly display an AAFCO stamp on their packaging. You’ll often see claims such as “our pet food meets or exceeds AAFCO guidelines” and “this food provides complete and balanced nutrition.” But what do these claims really mean, if anything? And what is the AAFCO? According to their website, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is “an independent membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.” AAFCO doesn’t have any regulatory authority itself, but its guidelines are used by government agencies. As it turns out, the phrase “complete and balanced” is actually a legally-protected term which can only be used on foods that meet AAFCO standards. In other words, a pet food manufacturer can’t make the claim unless their food passes the AAFCO testing process.

This all sounds great, and it must mean that any food bearing this claim must be healthy for your pet, right? Well… maybe not. When it comes down to it, the AAFCO testing isn’t all that rigorous when it comes to ensuring the quality of pet food. The basic testing process goes something like this:

1 Ingredients are reviewed to make sure they are not overly toxic and include some representation from the basic food groups.

2 The food is then tested on a minimum of eight (8) healthy animals.

3 Blood samples are taken and the average group number for each test is determined. The results are considered “normal” if the average blood test values shows no anemia and there are normal values for liver enzymes, protein levels, and hemoglobin.

4 As long as the animals don’t die of “nutritional causes” and the blood test values are satisfactory, the food passes. It doesn’t matter if the animals are itchy, lame, sickly, gain or lose weight, or dislike the food. This seems like a pretty low bar for a product that an animal can potentially be eating for its entire life. Hence it comes back to you as a good pet parent to take a closer look at what’s actually in those packages and cans you’re giving your precious pet.

Keeping Aquarian Fish Healthy

My first aquarium was set up in my teens and comprised the normal cold water gold-fish. They didn't survive long for some reason and the exercise of keeping fish as pets was soon abandoned. Years later, however, when my shop opened it was the tropical fish that took my fancy. They made a great addition to the flowers and other things that were retailed as part of my landscaping designing and florist business.

As an importer of these gorgeous creatures it wasn't long before my keen mind had learned enough about them to be able to advise purchasers of their needs. With all the accessories they require on hand the display units made a wonderful display at the rear of the plants and other outdoor products.

With the lights on most of the time and the tanks decorated with weeds and rocks it was a lovely experience. The fish were lively and colourful. Along with the bubbles floating to the surface it could not help but draw people's eyes.

As the large boxes arrived fresh off the aircraft the trick was to help them adjust to the new environment. That meant leaving their bags on the surface of the water for some time until the temperature inside the bag was the same as that of the tank. Even then other things had to be checked out.

The pH of the water is important and as most tap water contains chemicals, such as chlorine and, in Australia, fluorine the tanks have to be left for some time before the fish can be placed in them. As they had come from Asia and the water they were used to does not contain chemicals of this nature they could get sick if introduced too quickly.

It is these factors that make the keeping of tropical species a risky business. It takes time, effort, and a lot of money to set up a home aquarium and, unless one knows the correct procedure, the chances of survival is decreased. It took a lot of research before my knowledge was sufficient to deal with the many problems and anyone contemplating taking on keeping an aquarium needs to know how to keep the fish healthy.

How to Handle Nervous Cats

A few cats are extremely calm. But not all cats are tolerant and silent, you'll often face cats having aggressive and eager behavior. Such cats may cause some worry or disappointment for their masters despite the fact that their owners are willing to do everything to make their pets happy. If you consider yourself to be such a cat master, then you need to focus on increasing your knowledge regarding cats and their behaviors in order to keep your cat calmer and relax.

What is Behind Your Cat's Nervousness?

There are a lot of factors which can make your pet cat confuse and nervous. The most common cause for such nervousness is fear. You need to make sure that nothing in your home or surroundings is making the cat nervous or afraid. Also, if your cat has an unforgettable negative experience during the childhood, then such an incident or experience can lead to uncomfortable attitude. These negative childhood experiences can be of various types such as facing homelessness, improper treatment, bad social life experience related to cats, humans, dogs or even other species.

Similarly, change in environment can also make the cat feel nervous. For example, if you just purchased your cat and bring him/her home, then this change in environment can also make the cat feel confused or uncomfortable. But such situations can easily be improved with the passage of time, once your pet spent some time with you and your family provided no major trouble exists in the environment.

If you see your cat is trying to hide from others, don't panic. Keep in mind that if you'll provide her proper environment, she will soon overcome her nervousness. Hopefully, after some time, she will prefer to play with you instead of preferring to live in isolation.

This is a fact that most cats have an instinct for survival. This trait can lead to fight or flight reaction in particular situation which may cause the cat to run away or hide somewhere. Also, the presence of other cats in the surroundings can make the cat more nervous and it is observed that new cats often show defensive behavior in such situations. But such a situation keeps getting better day by day, all you need to do is to show some patience and wait.

There are times when your cat will be ill and like everybody else, cats consider illness as a scary situation. Therefore, you need to keep in mind that during the time of illness, your cat can show anxious behavior. Try to take your cat to doctor as soon as possible in order to get her out of discomfort and illness. This will surely help to make the cat healthy and relaxed in a minimal amount of time.

The presence of other pets especially dogs can also be a source of nervousness among cats. But no need to worry here as well, with the passage of time, your cat will adjust with dogs or other pets.

Conclusion

The main thing you must understand is that cats are basically sensitive species and needs proper love, care and safe environment to live happily and comfortably. Just provide the proper environment to your pet cats and surely, you'll get rid of all the problems related to your pet's behavior. However, this may take some time, so be patient.

Training Your Parrot

Parrots are great pets for the family. you will notice very quickly that these breads of birds are very intelligent and quick learners which makes the training very easy and exciting for the trainer.

You must never forget that birds with great intelligence can easily get bored with their training, this means as the training instructor you must spend the time needed to make your parrot feel content with being in your presence.

This will include both time and patience to correctly train your bird. by taking your time and being patient you will create a bond with your parrot that will last a lifetime.

By following a few very easy steps you can easily start the training for your bird. First thing is when you start your training session always take the bird out of the cage and find a small quiet area away from the cage. This will make it much easier for your parrot to stay focused and devoted to the task at hand.

The next step is to eliminate all distractions in the training area. Distractions in the training area will cause your parrot to get sidetracked and will result in a poor learning session. make sure you turn off the stereo, cell phone and TV.

Remember this, Parrots are like raising your young children. Training sessions should be small periods of time, Parrots have very small attention spans so take your time and always be patient.

Another thing to remember choose your session time around the bird's daily schedule. One of the best times to start a training session Is right after a meal, Your bird will be content and pay attention to what you are teaching. Always compliment your parrot, The more the better. Parrots really appreciate being complimented.

OK now this is very important, In the beginning of your training if it does not seem to be working at a level you wish it was. Never let your parrot see your stress level If you get mad and show your stress level to your bird, This will cause a undesirable encounter for the parrot which will in return cause a focus and learning problem in future training sessions.

Now its time to teach your bird a new trick. If you use a treat to compliment the trick your bird will remember this and start to work for the treat. Another thing you should always remember is: Not just birds but all animals respond to training session better to compliment compared to punishment or yelling at them. Always avoid yelling or punishing your bird even when they are performing a trick wrong.

Ignoring bad conduct is always the best thing to do when in a training session with your bird. Parrots do not understand a unfavorable offer or punishment. So this being said understand that if you decide to respond to your parrots bad behavior this may in fact be taken into view from the bird as constructive attention. This in return will cause undesirable conclusions to the training sessions.

Also remember your parrot will always love food and treats for compliments, but always try to praise worthy conduct and promote play around time. otherwise, you will have a problem getting your bird to perform or participate in training tricks when a snack or treat is not offered.

Repeating the tricks over and over again is very important to being successful in the training of your pet. The more you repeat the better your parrot will get. Just keep repeating these training steps over and over, And in time your parrot will learn the tricks and it will get easier for your bird to complete the trick. This general instructions concept will work for easy tricks as well as advanced talents.

For instance start out with a easy trick like having your parrot sit on your finger on demand. Use only 1 Keyword for each trick, And use the keyword every time you practice the trick. Remember never force or push your bird to train. If your bird seems to be tired or uninterested in training, Immediately stop the session and start the training session at a later time.

As time goes on and your parrot starts to learn tricks and commands you can start moving the training area closer to the bird's cage. As the confidence builds in your parrots unique skill they will begin to perform more and more in the household as well as there own bird cage.

Parrots learn amazingly fast in almost all cases. Not only by repeating training sessions but by just listening to sounds around them. So be careful what you repeat around them because chances are you will hear your own words sometime in the near future.

Just remember a few important things training a parrot requires a lot of patience and time. To make the partnership worthwhile you have to exchange love and take the time to understand your bird. With love training and proper care you can and will end up with a well trained bird and friendship that will last a lifetime.

How to Create a Homemade Bird House

A bird house can be a real treat for your children if you are planning to build one this summer. These shelters for birds add an elegant touch to your backyard. Moreover it can be painted or decorated with glass mosaic windows which will make the little house look even more beautiful. Other embellishments such as flowers can also be used to give it a whimsical effect. Mostly, wooden houses are made to rest on a post. In order to flaunt your creativity, you can also choose to decorate and paint the post on which the house stands.

Bring your kids along and make a homemade wooden house that your children will love. Here's a 4-step guide to creating a wonderful addition to your house.

Step 1

First and foremost, you should find a good stencil of either flowers, butterflies or other crafts that you think would go best with the exterior of the wooden bird house. Also, pick some exterior paints and a strong exterior sealer to give your bird house the protection it needs.

Step 2

Once you have decided on the stencils, secure them on the exterior of the wooden house using painter's tape. Next, apply paint on your stencil brush and dab lightly in its open areas. However, if you are using stamps for decoration, apply the paint directly onto the stamp and press it firmly on the exterior of your bird house. The outlines can then be done using a template and filled in with craft paints.

Step 3

After the exterior is complete, the next step involves making the roof for the wooden house. The roof can either be made into a shingle or metal roof. There are two ways of doing this. The first and also the easiest way to it is using a sheet of copper; however, if you want to make it look more neat, you can use craft sticks which need to be neatly cut and lined to form the bird house roof.

Step 4

Then come the windows for your birds' shelter. To make it look grand, make use of mosaic windows. In order to give it more detail, stick to it tiny pieces of broken ceramic or porcelain tiles. If you are up for a more creative touch, make a themed house. For instance, use sea shells to make a beach themed wooden bird house.

4 simple steps and your homemade bird house is ready to attract purple martins finding a comfortable shelter. If you find the process time consuming or difficult, you can choose to buy a ready-made purple martin house which would be a great option. There are many online stores that offer a wide variety of Martin houses to choose from.

Catching Birds

Every morning we prop the door open with a chair to let the cat go in and out for a couple of hours. We call this her exercise time and she is usually in and asleep under the bed before I remember to close the door. A couple of days ago, a very small bird got trapped in our lanai when the door was still open. The bird was very frightened and kept hitting the screen in its attempts to get out. Carefully I herded it towards the door until it found the open space and quickly disappeared from sight. I heaved a sigh of relief.

Although this was a very small bird (a sparrow? I'm not good at bird recognition), the Florida birds I'm most familiar with are the larger shore birds. We live next door to a wildlife preserve, 487 acres of inland waterways, walking and biking trails, native plants, small animals and birds which often make their way next door to our area.

Every day, we can feast our eyes on blue herons, roseate spoonbills, white egrets, wood storks, ibises, ospreys, hawks, cormorants, pelicans and (sometimes) eagles resting on our lawns or fishing in our man-made lakes that are stocked with fish. When I walk in the late afternoon, I often take binoculars along to get a better view of the birds that are just out of eye sight. I never tire of watching them.

Birds have been in our life and even in our house since our middle daughter was in grade school and we were living in California. She fell in love with the smaller tropical birds that you see in pet shops. The first bird was a cockatiel that was hand raised and very tame. He loved to sit on heads and shoulders and once he chose to do this to a TV repairman just as he bent over the back of our TV set. I heard his scream from the other end of the house. I don't know who was more frightened, the bird or the repairman.

Our daughter had two parakeets in a cage in her room. One, Marco, was very tame and could be let out for short periods. One day she called and asked me to bring the two birds to school for show and tell. Obediently I picked up the cage with the two birds and headed for the car. But when I placed them on the driveway to retrieve the car keys from my pocket, the cage door swung open and Marco flew the coop. Horrified, I watched him until he settled in a large tree by the corner of the house. I waited a few minutes, then decided I'd better take the remaining bird to school where our daughter was waiting,

At school, I handed her the cage, mumbling something about Marco's absence. But after the show and tell was over, I knew I had to tell her the truth. She burst into tears and asked to go home to look for him.

When we returned to the house, I was surprised to find that Marco had remained in the tree but on a much higher branch. I pointed him out to our daughter and when I saw her sad face, I knew what I had to do. I retrieved the extra birdcage from the house and loaded it with bird seed. Then, cage in hand, I started to climb the tree. I'm no athlete and climbing trees was never something I did well (even in my prime) but I was determined. With help from a step ladder, I reached a V in the tree and when I looked up, I saw Marco watching my every move. Carefully I maneuvered to the next protruding branch and, when I looked down, I knew this was my limit.

I balanced the cage on a branch above me, door open and hoped the seed looked good to a hungry bird. Marco cocked his head, looked at the bird seed and looked at me. He hopped down to a closer branch. Fifteen minutes later, he came a bit closer. My legs were cramped, my back hurt and the ground was much too far away but my daughter's tearful face at the bottom of the tree kept me going. Marco moved again, his eyes on the cage. Then - bang- he was in and I secured the cage door. My grateful daughter took the cage from me and I carefully made my way down the tree, very happy to feel the ground beneath my feet.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the last bird escapade. About a year later, my daughter decided to raise finches to sell to pet stores. We constructed an aviary in the back yard and soon it was occupied by dozens of finches. But our building skills left something to be desired and a few weeks later, we discovered at least half the finches had escaped through an opening in the screen that had come loose over the door. The escapees were flying overhead and perching on top of the aviary. I remembered the method I had used to trap Marco and thought maybe it would work again.

I grabbed the old birdcage, filled it with seed and then surveyed the yard. There was no tree to climb but there was a small one to hide behind. I tied a fishing line to the cage door and left the cage in front of the tree. Then I released enough line to get me behind the tree. I kneeled down and pulled the line taught so the cage door was wide open.

It didn't take long before the first finch hopped over to the door, enticed (I hoped) by the bird seed within. As soon as he hopped in, I let the fishing line go and the door swung shut. After I returned the finch to the aviary I repeated the exercise again and again, until we had most of the birds back in the aviary which, by now, had been patched up.

However, the birds were only part of the menagerie. We also had two dogs, a cat, a rabbit, two chickens and one duck. A friend of ours would bring his son to our house to visit because the child thought our yard was the zoo! And he might have been right.

When we moved from California to Syracuse, New York, the aviary had to go but the pet birds - one parakeet, one cockatiel and an African grey parrot - came with us, in addition to two dogs. We traveled by air to our new home and created quite a stir at baggage claim when the three crates holding the larger creatures rolled down the belt. I hand-carried the parakeet and cockatiel in a small cage. They, too, startled other passengers with their small vocabularies: hello, how are you, good-bye and cockadoodle-doo.

A year later, when my daughter left for college, we found a wonderful new home for the cockatiel and parakeet with a woman who had an equally tame female cockatiel. The last I heard both cockatiels spent most days riding on her shoulders and the parakeet followed close behind. The African grey parrot got sick and, when I learned that the veterinarian treating him had a room at home just for her parrots, I offered her ours in return for the bill. It was a win-win but most of all, I knew the parrot had a good home.

I'm very happy now to enjoy the birds in the wild and at a distance and to pet other people's dogs when I pass them on the street. My husband and I presently have close contact with only one cat - she is more than enough to take care of (and sometimes, too much!). But the zoo years - along with our children's childhoods - were precious and the memories will be there forever.

Food for Aquarium Fish

Fish like all animals require food. The food they eat should contain all the ingredients necessary for healthy growth and wellbeing. Too often, owners give only one type of food to fish.

This results in deficiencies which result in stunted growth and other abnormalities.

Healthy fish should be vigorous in motion, bright-colored with proper proportions. Examine your fish regularly for any signs of poor nutrition.

To provide proper nutrition, it is first necessary to understand the dietary habits of fish. Some fish are carnivores (meat-eating). Some are herbivores (plant-eating). While most fish are omnivores (eating both plant and animal food).

Carnivorous fish need a protein based diet. These include dried worms, shrimp, etc. Herbivorous fish require plant-based food. Examples are Spirulina, peas, etc.

Hence, try to find out the natural food for the fish you keep. There are different types of fishfeed available in the market. If you have a community aquarium, it is best to add a mixture of animal based and plant-based food.

Adding natural plants to the aquarium gives a source of food to herbivorous fish.

Another reason for poor nutrition among fish is the wrong of choice of type of fishfeed. Fish feed can be broadly categorized into floating food and sinking food.

Choose the type of food depending on the fish you have. Surface floating food will not be accessible to fish living the middle regions or in the bottom. These fish will become malnourished. Sinking food which slowly sinks to the bottom gives a chance to these fish to have food.

Hence, provide a combination of floating and sinking food to your fish. Ensure that the food are in proper size. Small fish with their small mouths cannot handle big chunks of food. These fish will go hungry.

When food is added to fish. The food may float in the surface of the water. This makes the food available to surface fish which stay in the surface. However, there are many species of fish which do not come to the surface.

These fish will not get food. Hence, when feeding it is necessary to choose your food depending on the fish you have. Sinking Food is a special type of food which sinks once it is dropped into the tank. This ensures that middle level fish also get a chance to eat.

There are different types of sinking food depending on the rate of sinking.

If you have nocturnal fish, drop some food before switching the lights off. This will ensure that the fish which forage at night will be able to eat.

Flaked Food is fish food which has been made into flakes. The food is mixed and then extruded or heated which produces the layers known as flakes. Flakes are very popular among hobbyists. Virtually all types of fish food can be made into flakes. flaked food

The flakes are small in size and usually float in the water. This gives time for the fish to eat them. The Flake are usually fortified with minerals.

The size of the flake should be suitable for the fish. Small fish may not be able to eat large flakes.

Flakes usually come in sealed containers. They usually have a best-before date.

Store Flakes in a cool dry place. Moisture and light should not be allowed to reach the flake foods.

How To Keep Your Cat Warm In Winter?

Cats enjoy being warm and cozy all the time. This is the reason why they sit in bowls, boxes and other sunny places in the house. You will usually find them taking a nap at the warmest spot of the room. Winter hurts them the most as they have a very thin coat (skin) that just doesn't provide enough insulation. Your beloved baby needs some extra care during this season and this applies to all the pets.

There are various ways through which you can ensure that your kitty spends her fall comfortably. You just need to put in a bit of effort for the same. Here are some of the tips through which you can take care of your kitty.

1. Keep them indoor
Try to keep your pet inside the house as much as possible. Felines have a habit of following the sun rays where they will find a warm place on their own. However, if you get time, you can take your kitty to the park or in the lawn when it's bright and sunny outside. She can have a cozy power nap there.

2. Warm cat bed
Keep the bed of the feline warm by using layers of bed. Bedding is important for keeping a pet warm during winter. It will be better if you make the bed in the shape of a tent and cover it with the blanket. This way the kitty will simply curl inside it and you will not have to cover her up all the time. Cushions, old clothes and winter wear can make the perfect bedding for your feline.

3. Keep a balance of heat
Don't keep them in front of the heater and blower for a long time. As, when they go out of the room, their body will find it difficult to adjust to the sudden change in temperature. Keep the temperature of the room balanced. Only turn on the heater for some time and then let the body of the kitty adjust the change slowly. Moreover, make sure that even the temperature of the bed heats up to only the temperature of the cat's body.

4. Keep the body covered
Try to keep her body covered as much as possible. You can even get cat apparel for her. There are a lot of dresses available for kitties in the market. Few of them even features hoods, that can keep the ears away from the winter chill. The feline will love the bright and attractive color of these apparel. Make sure that the fit is not restricting the movement of the feline. Check the fabric before buying them. The material should be soft and should be lightweight. Don't make them spend the entire day in clothes, this will irritate them. Put them on when it's extremely cold or when the feline is going out.

5. Exercise and balance diet
Make sure that the kitty is not being lazy as this will restrict the temperature regulation. Take out some time and play with her. The play session should involve some physical exercise. It is important for them to retain their energy by sleeping, but it is equally important to exercise, in order to maintain the blood circulation.

Indoor animals have different dietary needs. Take care of what they eat and how much they eat. Especially for senior cats, it is important that they are taken care of, during this season. Felines are like children, you need to be careful while raising them up. Just stick to the basic! Keep these points in mind and you can prove to be the best fur parent.
